We’re engaged! Yup, Ryan proposed back on September 20th, 2013, the day after his birthday, in the backyard of my home in Dallas – the weather was perfect, the sun was low and I was happy and without a clue. The setting was incredibly romantic and intimate, as it’s probably my favorite place in the world. The backyard stretches over 5 acres, the trees are tall and luscious and the view resembles a beautiful forest in some far away land. So that day right before sunset, Ryan got on one knee and asked me to marry him, and I truly thought he was joking until he placed a ring on my finger. That’s what he gets for fake proposing with Ringpops over the years! 🙂 His best friend and future Best Man caught the proposal on video, and it is hilarious because I had no clue what was going on! I always envisioned myself screaming or crying, but I was blank and confused.
Then, he said, “I’m not kidding,” three times and I grabbed my heart. We hugged and kissed over and over again and I smiled at the camera, realizing Jake wasn’t really taking pictures to send to Ryan’s mom before his birthday dinner. Sometimes I go back to watch that video and I tear up. It describes us perfectly. Me always confused and Ryan always assuring me just how much loves me.
I thought he had stepped on something. Seriously, I did. I thought he had stepped on something sharp that went right through his shoe.
Here are some screenshots from the video of us becoming engaged: I am often amazed by the man God created for me. His heart is made out of gold. I recently lost my grandpa, and Ryan dropped everything to come to the funeral with me, which was a six-hour drive to Lubbock. He hugged my mom whenever she needed it, he caught up with my uncles and cousins over neighborhood casseroles, and he continuously reminded me that Jesus and my Daddy-Bob were kicking up “gold dust” in heaven. Daddy-Bob hadn’t been able to walk for years, so I liked the idea of him skipping rather than walking.
I want to live a long, happy life with Ryan, and while God’s plan is unpredictable to His children, we can still make decisions that will keep our bodies strong. After all, the Lord instructs us to take care of our temples. That’s why I want to invest in clean eating. On this earth, I want to live as long as I can with Ryan until we go home to Jesus. There, we can eat as much cookie dough as we want, but here we need to pay attention to what we are putting in our bodies. I don’t, however, believe that means sacrificing the taste of food.
Ryan and I were able to design my wedding ring together. After he proposed with a ring of my birthstone, we went to a family jeweler and had one created. Together, we made each decision, and we smiled and hugged through the process. I felt like a princess. But my ring represents so much more than an engagement – it represents eternal life together, on this earth and in the Lord’s Kingdom. I vow to take care of Ryan and our family. That’s why I do what I do.PS I love being engaged.
